If you're like me you may have several old tee-shirts, jeans in the closet that are too holey to wear anymore. While it's sometimes hard to let these old friends go, it feels good to know I can turn these rags into riches and help the environment at the same time!
When you think about the benefits it's a no brainer:
- Save trees - If every household in the United States reduced their consumption of paper towels by 1 roll per week if would save 544,000 trees! WOW!
- Save cash $- An average family of four uses between 1.5 and 2 rolls of papertowels a week. At approximately $2.00 per roll you could expect to save between $150.00 and $200.00 this year just by cutting up your old Tee-Shirts!
- More closet space -So you can take the money you save on paper towels and buy new clothes...which someday may turn bag into rags!
When possible, wash clothes in cold water. About 90% of the energy used in a clothes washer goes to water heating.
Make sure your dryer's outside vent is clear and clean the lint filter after every load. The dryer runs more effceintly and a clogged vent and flter can be a fire hazard.
Hang your clothes out to dry. We are a family of 4 so we do anywhere from 10 -15 loads of laundry per week. Based on the current electricity costs in our area and the kilowatts rating on our dryer we save almost $30.00 per month by hanging our clothes out on the line. You use no energy, your clothes smell great.
